John Fielding Special School Governing Body Members

Daran Bland - Head Teacher Governor

Governing Body Members

“I was born in North London moved to Lincolnshire in 2002. I have been a teacher for over 22 years. During that time I have worked in both mainstream and special schools. I was appointed Headteacher at The Priory School in 2005 and then Executive Headteacher across both The Priory and Garth Special Schools in 2007. Since 2015 my Executive Headship responsibilities have expanded to include The John Fielding Special School.

We are in this job to provide the best that we can for the pupils and families we serve. What excites me is the ability that all schools have to learn from one another. Being the head of three schools has provided lots of opportunity to share best practice…and learn from the things that don’t go so well! In November 2016 I was appointed as a National Leader of Education.

As Head Teacher Governor I am committed to working with staff, parents and the Local Governing Body to ensure that outcomes for pupils at John Fielding School are excellent, the school is as vibrant as it can possibly be and that everything possible is done to prepare children for their adult lives.”

Rachel Smith - Teacher Grantham Additional Needs Fellowship

My name is Rachel Smith, I am a new member of the governing body at John Fielding Special School. Psychology has always interested me and in particular the ways in which children display behaviours. I studied Psychology with child studies at Lincoln University in 2008. I volunteered in a primary school in a Year 1 class alongside my studies to gain valuable classroom experience.

At the University of Northampton I gained a Graduate Diploma in Early Years with Early Years Professional Status. This enabled me to work with management teams in private day nurseries to support the additional needs provision they offer.

I was lucky to gain lots of different experience in a range of Early Years settings, teamed with my background in child development, I completed Teacher training in Newcastle.

I am a qualified teacher, and have just begun my third year of teaching at Grantham Additional Needs Fellowship with a wonderful group of Early Years children. It is my passion to enhance and develop learning opportunities within Early Years to support the holistic child. I am committed to supporting the developing needs at John Fielding and improving outcomes for all.
