John Fielding Special School Governing Body Members

Daran Bland - Head Teacher Governor

“I was born in North London moved to Lincolnshire in 2002. I have been a teacher for over 22 years. During that time I have worked in both mainstream and special schools. I was appointed Headteacher at The Priory School in 2005 and then Executive Headteacher across both The Priory and Garth Special Schools in 2007. Since 2015 my Executive Headship responsibilities have expanded to include The John Fielding Special School.

We are in this job to provide the best that we can for the pupils and families we serve. What excites me is the ability that all schools have to learn from one another. Being the head of three schools has provided lots of opportunity to share best practice and learn from the things that don’t go so well! In November 2016 I was appointed as a National Leader of Education.

As Head Teacher Governor I am committed to working with staff, parents and the Local Governing Body to ensure that outcomes for pupils at John Fielding School are excellent, the school is as vibrant as it can possibly be and that everything possible is done to prepare children for their adult lives.”

Janice Cotgreave - Home School Liasion Officer

My name is Janice Cotgreave, and I am the Home School Liaison Officer at The John Fielding Special School.  I have worked at the school since 2003, in all classes at one time or another, but have been involved with the school since 1993 when my son became a pupil here.

I am passionate about the children and young people that attend the school, and providing as much support for them and their families as I can, knowing from my own experiences how difficult a job it can be.

I run the monthly Parent Group to try and enable parents to feel supported and informed, and for them to make friends.  The parents of our pupils do not always meet each other at the school gates, as they might at a mainstream school, and so can feel isolated.

I am the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead within school, which is a crucial part of my role and being a part of the Safeguarding team ensures continuity of safeguarding of our pupils.

Rachel Smith - Teacher Grantham Additional Needs Fellowship

My name is Rachel Smith, I am a new member of the governing body at John Fielding Special School. Psychology has always interested me and in particular the ways in which children display behaviours. I studied Psychology with child studies at Lincoln University in 2008. I volunteered in a primary school in a Year 1 class alongside my studies to gain valuable classroom experience.

At the University of Northampton I gained a Graduate Diploma in Early Years with Early Years Professional Status. This enabled me to work with management teams in private day nurseries to support the additional needs provision they offer.

I was lucky to gain lots of different experience in a range of Early Years settings, teamed with my background in child development, I completed Teacher training in Newcastle.

I am a qualified teacher, and have just begun my third year of teaching at Grantham Additional Needs Fellowship with a wonderful group of Early Years children. It is my passion to enhance and develop learning opportunities within Early Years to support the holistic child. I am committed to supporting the developing needs at John Fielding and improving outcomes for all.

Stela Plamenova - Head Teacher of Sandon School in Grantham

My name is Stela Plamenova. I was born and raised in Bulgaria. I received my primary education at a Russian Language Grammar School until the age of 12 and then moved to an English Language Secondary School.

I am Head Teacher of Sandon School in Grantham. Sandon is a school for students with severe learning needs and challenging behaviours.

I hold a master’s degree in Special Pedagogy and two further professional development certificates in Autism from the University of Cambridge.

I have worked in special education since 2003, starting as a class teacher and then progressing into my current role as Head Teacher.
